The Alvito’s Palace, which dates back the 1500’s, is located in the Largo do Conde Barão, in Lisbon. It is a noble building, surrounded by other buildings of great historic value, a testimony to an old and prosperous city. The image of this urban nucleus is still preserved and the architectural developments that followed through time adapted well to it.
After being used for a variety of purposes the palace will be restored to its original intent, housing. It once was a single family home and we propose to maintain the floor plan division as the palace is changed into a multi family building. The palace’s noble spaces will be renovated and adapted in their entirety to the new units.
Two new structures are added in the yard. In order to better integrate these structures they are placed in the yard, long abandoned. And they feature rooftop gardens, thus accentuating their connection with the surrounding buildings. Between them there is a new contemporary garden which offers a view to old and new housing structures.
Two eras coexist side by side, certain that the city needs to be revitalized with the urgency of renovation and the truth of today’s architecture.
