Rio Vermelho's House

Local: São Salvador da Bahia, Brazil

Year: 2012

This space had the direct intervention of Jorge Amado and Zelia Gattai who planted trees, plants and a vegetable garden. Also several artists, friends of the owners, were invited to create statues, tiles and other pieces of art that were distributed through the garden. Sculptures by Mário Cravo, Tati Moreno and Genaro de Carvalho, the tiles of the Portuguese José Franco and the Brazilian Carybé, are some examples. These contributions undoubtedly gave a dimension that can’t be neglected.

Thus, the objective that guided this garden’s rehabilitation was to maintain the spirit of the place, preserving its cultural heritage, and its adaptation to a museum.

Therefore, it’s proposed:

  • Garden and woods revitalization;
  • The recovery and replacement of vegetation, herbaceous layer and grove;
  • The highlight of the figures (Orishas);
  • The recovery of floors, walls, ponds and statues;
  • The cleaning, thinning and pruning operations;
  • The adaption to a museum space (signage, identification of existing species, identification of existing figures and its description, definition of route and library of the author).
